Join us at the Cold Supply System and Solutions 2013 Conference

On Thursday 7 March 2013 Luc Huybreghts, Senior QA Consultant Pharma Services with Pauwels Consulting, will speak at the Cold Supply System & Solutions (CSS2013) Conference in Brussels.

Cold Supply System and Solutions 2013 — Brussels

CSS2013 is focused on the current impact of the Good Distribution Practices guidelines concerning time and temperature controlled products within the healthcare industry. The symposium covers all temperatures including the ‘Hottest Temperature Topic’: AMBIENT.

Senior EU GDP inspectors will demonstrate what the exact requirements for such products are and how to correctly interpret the actual GDP text.

Luc Huybreghts discusses the new EU GDP on transportation

Luc Huybreghts - Pauwels ConsultingIn his presentation Luc Huybreghts will discuss the influence of the new EU Good Distribution Practices on transportation. He will speak about a risk mitigation approach for identifying and classifying different modes of transport.

This implies risk assessment techniques, equipment and route qualification and the deployment of quality/service level agreements with the different stakeholders.

Where and when

CSS2013 will take place at the Sheraton Brussels Hotel, ‘just 39 steps from the Brussels National Airport entrance’. Luc will present on Thursday 7 March at 11:45am and 12:30pm.

The full program, including all the GDP chapters that will be covered, can be found here: Program Cold Supply System and Solutions 2013 (CSS2013) Conference.

If you want to meet up with Luc, please send an email before the conference. Luc’s presentation will be published on this website after the conference.

Pauwels Consulting and Medical People run their first marathon

On February 9, the Heroes of Pauwels Consulting and Medical People completed their first marathon at the Watersportbaan in Ghent, Belgium.

As part of our commitment to the Be A Hero For One Day initiative Niels, Ralph, Klaas, Katia, Christophe and Bert joined forces to run a full marathon… and an additional 5 kilometres! That is more than 47 kilometres in total. And it was a joy to do this! The short video below gives a nice impression of the day.

Special thanks go to Tom and Ester for the moral support! Much appreciated!

Fun to run!

Our running team was quite diverse: Niels is a hare capable of running a marathon on one leg, Ralph and Katia are working towards the Antwerp 10 Miles (Pauwels Consulting and Medical People will participate in the Antwerp 10 Miles — see the list with our running events below), Klaas just wanted a nice cool Saturday run, Bert is an avid runner and Christophe hadn’t trained but he ran his 5 kilometres nonetheless. This proves our point that everybody can run at least 5 kilometres. So why not join us?

International air transport of ambient goods

Pauwels Consulting is involved in challenging projects with leading pharmaceutical companies in Belgium and beyond. In this interview Guy Hoskens, Consultant Pharma Services with Pauwels Consulting, introduces us to one of his projects. This project is aimed at studying and minimizing temperature fluctuations of ambient shipments during international air transport.

Push the play button, then press the subtitle icon next to the cog icon for English subtitles.

At the moment, Guy Hoskens is involved in 4 projects:

  • a project that will lead to the development of a quality system for the transport organization of our pharmaceutical partner
  • a project in which Guy offers support to streamline the execution of general operational affairs
  • a study of temperature fluctuactions during international transports of ambient goods
  • a project in which a strategy will be set up to protect ambient goods during air transport

Ambient products need to be preserved between 15 and 25 degrees Celsius. As a result the transport of ambient goods is strictly monitored. The aim of the study on temperature fluctuations of ambient products serves 2 goals:

  • keeping the transportation flows under control so that the ambient products reach patients in good condition
  • keeping the pharmaceutical organization compliant with all laws regarding temperature-controlled transport

As project manager Guy has been involved in the project from the very start. The project has 3 phases:

    • stage 1: preparation
During the first stage of the project Guy studied similar studies and relevant laws on the transport of ambient products. Then he wrote a project protocol and he informed and trained all stakeholders in the project.
    • stage 2: commercial shipments
During the second stage of the project commercial shipments are being sent from Belgium to partners across the globe. These shipments are closely monitored. Guy’s responsibilities include the selection of the test orders, informing all parties involved and monitoring the data collection of the different shipments.
    • stage 3: reporting
In the third stage of the project all data from the shipments will be collected, analyzed and summarized in a report. The report will present conclusions and recommendationas to ensure that the transport of ambient goods is compliant with the latest laws on this matter.

The pharmaceutical industry is a very dynamic work environment. As Guy puts it: “The transport of ambient goods has to comply with strict laws and regulations, but no one tells you how to organize such transports.” The ever-changing nature of the laws on this matter makes the transport of ambient goods both challenging and fascinating.

Very Important Products — Track and Trace to the extreme

The whereabouts and quality of medicines are closely monitored from their production to their delivery at your local pharmacist. These safety measures prevent drugs from being contaminated or stolen, and they help secure your safety and the safety of patients worldwide.

Your medicines get a truly royal treatment. They are considered VIP’s (Very Important products) from their very inception. They are produced with special care, stored in the best conditions and they travel in style. Do you want to know what this looks like?

Very Important Products

It is very common these days to order products on the internet. Whether you buy books, electronics or clothing form online retailers, nowadays you can follow each step of the delivery process through track and trace:

  • You get a notification when your order is received
  • You get a notification when your order is picked
  • You get a notification when your order is sent for transport
  • You get a notification when your order arrives at a local distribution point
  • You get a follow-up notification to check whether the product arrived in good order

The whereabouts and quality of your medicines are monitored and protected by similar but much more stringent track and trace mechanisms. The entire production and journey of your drugs to your local pharmacist are closely monitored and documented. For your safety only.

Track and Trace to the extreme

Most drugs are made from ingredients from all of the world. The pharmaceutical industry monitors and documents the origins and quality of every single one of these ingredients with the greatest care. This allows us to safeguard public health and to trace back the origins of safety issues should any issues arise with the drugs at a later stage.

Pauwels Consulting Track and Trace MedicinesThe transport of individual ingredients and intermediate goods is a challenge in its own right. Take the ingredients of vaccines for example. Since many of these ingredients are sensitive to temperature and/or humidity changes, they are stored and moved in secured temperature protective packaging with dry ice and cooling packs. This way we can ensure a constant and safe temperature and humidity. Depending on the product, we even go as far as measuring physical disruptions such as shocks during the transport. Imagine what it takes to organize such transports over air, sea and land!

Evidently, the production of medicinal products requires great care as well. The cells that are used for the production of your vaccines for example are often stored in liquid nitrogen. They are cultivated from small sterile flasks to huge fermenters where they encounter the best possible circumstances for growth. Oxygen and feeding materials are added and waste is removed. Critical parameters are constantly monitored, both on-line and offline.

Before your drugs embark on their final journey to your local pharmacist, they are kept in special conditioned rooms and warehouses. And prior to releasing them to the public, each lot is extensively tested to secure public safety. After a last trip in a cooled container with tampered material, your drugs end up in a secured refrigerator at your local pharmacist waiting for you to pick them up.

There is more to your drugs than meets the eye

The safety measures, the detailed monitoring, the secured transports… all of this seems inspired by the script of a blockbuster movie. It is reassuring though that the pharmaceutical industry takes such great care to protect public health. This takes a lot of effort, but is very inspiring to be involved in the process!

A New Year, a New Challenge: Be a Hero for One Day

Every year we are making New Year’s resolutions. This also counts for Pauwels Consulting. Pauwels Consulting, Proud Sponsor of Be a Hero For One DayWho or what is Marathon Man?

Marathon Man is a household name in the international sports world. Marathon Man, in real life called Stefaan Engels, is a sports enthusiast from Ghent. In 2010 he ran a marathon every day in the most beautiful places around the world. That is 365 marathons in one year! Marathon Man now spends his time promoting sports to schools, businesses and the general public.

Who or what is Hero for One Day?

In 2013 Marathon Man will involve us all in his new challenge: Be a Hero for One Day. In 2013 marathons will be run daily around the Watersportbaan in Ghent by people like you and me, individual sports enthusiasts and athletic families, friends and businesses.

Do you trust the pill you took today?

In the first episode of the film The Matrix, the main character Neo is offered the choice to take a red pill or a blue pill. The blue pill will keep him ignorant of the real world around him. The red pill will show him the true mechanics that rule the world.

Most of us take pills and other medicines on a regular basis but few of us like to think about their origin, quality and safety. We simply take their quality for granted. We assume their safety. Can you live with this ignorance or do you want to know more about the medicines your life depends on?

Where do your medicines come from?

Most of us take medicines on a regular basis. We swallow, inhale or inject drugs to prevent or fight diseases, to relieve us from pain and to improve our overall quality of life. Medicines often mean the difference between life and death.

With the importance of medicines in mind, it strikes me that most patients know so little about the origin, quality and safety or the drugs they rely on. We assume that others safeguard our medicines, but we don’t know how they do it.

Pauwels Consulting - Do you trust the pills you took today?

Are your medicines safe?

Rest assured. There is a strictly regulated world behind our drugs. A world that is based on rules and best practices and that is governed by health authorities such as the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) in the US and het Federaal Agentschap voor Geneesmiddelen en Gezondheidsproducten (FAGG) in Belgium.

All phases in the production, storage, transport and distribution of drugs are closely monitored from the moment that raw materials are harvested to the moment that you buy your drugs from your local pharmacist. This way we can be spared from counterfeit and contaminated drugs.
